Dandruff is a NON contagious SCALP CONDITION caused by excessive shedding of dead skin from the scalp. Dandruff is typically associated with itching as dried skin turns into flakes and get attached to accumulated oil on scalp and blocks the pores resulting in severe itching.
Even in healthy individuals scalp skin shedding will happen but it happens around once in a month but those suffering with dandruff this shedding and flaking happens at every 3-7 days making flaking a real problem.

As scalp skin sheds excess oil a fungal micro-organism/yeast called Malassezia globosa feeds on oils on the scalp and break down this oil and body perceives these break down particles as an irritant and produce excess skin cells resulting in accumulation of more dead skin over scalp and in turn these dead skin turns into flakes.
